Want more traffic, fast? Fix these 4 common UX mistakes

Good or bad UX is one of the most important drivers of traffic to or from your website [and therefore your business]. If a site isn’t meeting the expectations of your audience, there are likely to be a whole heap of other sites they can head to instead.

If your digital marketing strategy, social media plan, and SEO campaigns are all on point but you’re not getting the traffic you know you deserve, your site’s UX might be letting you down.

What does UX mean?

UX is short for user experience. It’s how end users experience and interact with your products, services and systems. According to Wikipedia, ‘It includes a person’s perceptions of utility, ease of use, and efficiency.

So, as a digital marketing agency, what are the most common UX mistakes that we see on sites in 2022…how the hell can you fix them?

1. Your site isn’t mobile friendly

According to Statista, mobile accounts for approximately half of web traffic worldwide. In the second quarter of 2022, mobile devices generated a massive 58.99% of global website traffic! You read that right! Over HALF of all traffic worldwide is from a mobile device.

For this reason, Google now includes a mobile useability ranking score when evaluating your site. That means, if your business has a poorly-performing mobile site, your SEO will also suffer.

2. Your site lacks coherence

Although there’s a lot of unpredictability when it comes to customer behaviour, one thing is for certain: customers want [and need] coherence. Whether you sell leather handbags or straw hats, your customers are coming to your site to get a job done. And it’s your job to make that experience [aka UX] seamless.

Coherence, of course, does include having killer copy on your site. If your sentences have poor grammar and spelling and your lingo confuses people, they’ll run in the opposite direction, fast. Coherence also means creating navigation that flows. Your navigation bar should be logical, easy to read and super simple to follow.

3. You haven’t considered SEO

Want to increase traffic and up your conversion rate? If no one can find your site in the first place, their experience of it won’t just be bad – it won’t exist at all!

People [like us digital marketing fiends] go on about SEO a lot – and for good reason. Why? Well, there’s a serious difference between appearing on page one of Google and page six. How often do you wade through more than a couple of pages of the search engine results pages to find what you want? Be honest – never, right?

Lots of sites are still using outdated SEO tactics – using poorly-researched keywords and creating content for search engines rather than people [which ironically, won’t help your search engine ranking in 2022].

4. You haven’t considered accessibility

One in five Australians are living with a disability. When your site’s UX isn’t created with everyone in mind, you not only marginalise people [which is a whole ‘nother conversation] but it has the potential to prevent them interacting with your product or service.

According to Neil Patel, ‘Complying with UX accessibility design trends can bolster your company’s reputation. Making an effort to cater to a particular group of disadvantaged users proves your company cares about all of its customers. This added step may encourage potential customers to do more business with your brand going forward.’

So, how can you improve UX accessibility design on your website?

  • Include alt text in your images so that those with screen readers can benefit from the image too.
  • Don’t use similar colours for text and backgrounds as it can be unreadable for some users. Check out this Contrast Checker from WebAIM to see how your site fairs.
  • Add keyboard accessibility for screen readers.
